Between 1562 and 1570, the Flemish artist Anton van den Wyngaerde traveled throughout Spain at the request of Philip II to produce detailed topographical views of its cities and towns. Thanks to his talent as a draftsman and observer, he left behind a valuable graphic record that today allows us to visually reconstruct lost or transformed monuments. This volume brings together for the first time all of his drawings, scattered throughout European museums for centuries, and presents them in a large format with foldouts of up to five pages. The work is enriched by essays by leading specialists from the Golden Age: Jonathan Brown and Richard Kagan analyze Philip II's patronage and his interest in art and geography; Haverkamp-Begemann studies the artist's technique; Kagan explores 16th-century cities; and Fernando Marías introduces the urban planning of the period.
