The production of altarpieces in Castile and the Iberian Peninsula during the 15th century was abundant, but most were lost or fragmented due to the rise of private collecting in the 19th and 20th centuries, which has made their study difficult. A prominent example is the altarpiece of the Flagellation, which has survived complete in its essential parts and has been the subject of exhaustive analysis by Professor Joaquín Yarza. This study has allowed a precise stylistic and chronological approximation, in addition to offering valuable information on the functioning of patronage, contracts between patrons and artists, the dissemination of styles, and the iconographic sources used. Yarza also identifies the client, Doña Leonor de Velasco, through the heraldic symbols on one of the panels and studies the possible authors of the altarpiece, analyzing its style in relation to other contemporary works. The book, which includes more than eighty color images, offers a detailed and illuminating look at this fascinating artistic period.
