This book chronicles the genesis, fabrication, and installation of a singular work, halfway between sculpture and architecture. It is a composition similar to a large sea urchin exoskeleton made of closely spaced sheets, designed and created using a computer and then precisely joined to form a sculptural concrete structure. It is also a piece of exploration into the empty, habitable space generated around a central pillar, a construction model that harks back to unique examples of medieval architecture, such as the Hermitage of San Baudelio de Berlanga and others. The theoretical implications of this urchin give rise to valuable reflections from architecture, art history, the relationship between the body and nature, and ways of inhabiting space. From another perspective, the conception and creation of a large, heavy, yet delicate concrete piece allows for the account of a fascinating practical process.
