The paintings assembled in this catalog represent a small but significant portion of the San Diego Museum of Art's collection of 16th- to 19th-century Hindu paintings. Assembled by Edwin Binney III (1925–1986), the collection is one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of South Asian paintings outside of India, numbering nearly 1,500 works. Grouped into two sections entitled "The Throne, the Hunt, and the Heart" and "The Elephant in Indian Culture," the majority of the paintings relate to Hindu religious and visual culture and were made for Hindu patrons associated with kingdoms scattered throughout northern and central India. The texts in this catalog delve deeper into these beautiful and timeless works, many of which are on display here for the first time.
