This work reconstructs the life and work of Mateo Aguado, the previously unknown tailor who created the striking gowns that gave the Spanish court its distinctive look during the reign of Philip IV. As chamber tailor to the queen from 1630 until his death in 1672, Aguado designed the iconic garments immortalized in Diego Velázquez's portraits of Queens Isabella of Bourbon and Mariana of Austria, and Infantas Maria Teresa and Margarita. Based on meticulous research in the General Archive of the Palace of Madrid, this lavishly illustrated book brings to life the world of the court's artisans and details for the first time the garments and accessories they crafted for their royal patrons. The costumes Mateo Aguado designed for the Royal Household shaped a new vision of Spanish style that remains instantly recognizable and continues to inspire fashion designers and artists today.
