The Territory is the third volume in the Visions of Latin America series, following Urban Views and Industry. Based on the photographic collection of the Hispanic Society of America, this book offers a unique look at the South American landscape between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through mostly previously unpublished images, it portrays dense jungles, towering waterfalls, majestic mountain ranges, and the inhabitants of these territories: settlers, indigenous peoples, and remote communities. The photographs also document archaeological discoveries, revealing vestiges of the past that were emerging before early photographers. This work explores the geography, history, and daily life of a region in transformation, through the astonished eyes of those who traveled there with their cameras.
