As scholars and aficionados of Renaissance and Baroque art know, Spanish convents and monasteries house a considerable number of sculptural, pictorial, and furniture works barely known to specialists in these areas and completely unknown to the general public. The enclosure, which has prevented the aesthetic enjoyment of these works by consecrating them to their original religious use, has also allowed for the preservation of a heritage that might otherwise have been lost or, most certainly, would have been deprived of the context for which it was created. Balbina Martínez Caviró, professor of Art History at the Complutense University of Madrid and director of the Valencia Institute of Don Juan, managed to penetrate the sixteen remaining cloistered convents in Toledo. The results of her work are reflected in this lavishly illustrated book, which brings to light for the first time the architectural and artistic treasures of these religious institutions.
