This catalogue presents the exhibition held at the Royal Palace in Madrid from June to October 2016, which features an outstanding collection of paintings and sculptures produced in Italy throughout the 17th century by artists such as Caravaggio, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Alessandro Algardi, Federico Barocci, Charles Le Brun, Guercino, Carlo Maratti, Guido Reni, José de Ribera, Diego Velázquez and others. These paintings are housed in the Royal Collections of the National Heritage and have been restored to their former glory thanks to the extensive restoration campaign carried out.
These works were commissioned by the Austrians during the 17th century, later acquired by the Bourbons, or were the result of gifts and donations to the monarchs from Spanish nobles who carried out diplomatic missions or were in charge of governing Spanish possessions in Italy, as well as from the rulers of the Italian states.
The catalogue has the collaboration of around twenty international experts, who have reviewed these pieces, which until now were unpublished or insufficiently studied due to their location in inaccessible spaces or their poor state of conservation.
