The Marquis of Villalobar (1866-1926) was one of the most prominent diplomatic figures of the reign of Alfonso XIII. His close relationship with the Spanish Crown made him a staunch defender of the monarchy, representing its interests on several fronts. In London, he handled matters related to the king's marriage, and in Portugal, during the 1910 Revolution and the First Republic, he fought against republican influence, promoting the monarchical counterrevolution. During the First World War in Belgium, Villalobar adopted the humanitarian policies of King Alfonso XIII, standing out as the "Protector Minister of the Belgians," saving lives and mitigating the effects of the German occupation. Despite suffering from a severe physical disability, his strong will and deep monarchical commitment led him to successfully represent Spain as an ambassador. This study by Álvaro Lozano, based on previously unpublished archives, offers crucial insight into Alfonso XIII's diplomacy.
