The monumental and multifaceted figure of Francisco de Goya (1746 - 1828) has been studied extensively in its multiple facets by numerous and outstanding researchers, practically since the moment of his death, but, paradoxically, only in recent years have some, scarce, technical and analytical studies of his work begun to be published, both of his easel paintings and his mural compositions.
The study presented here aims, in addition to compiling the existing bibliography on this specific aspect of Goya's work, to complement these contributions with a chronological overview focused on the technical analysis of fifteen key paintings, most of which are held in private Spanish collections, with some recently incorporated into national museums.
