This catalogue is a reminder of the exhibition Rococo Paintings (1690-1840) by Luca Giordano to Vicente López, a selection of twenty paintings and two drawings from a period that extends from the late Baroque to early Romanticism, in parallel with the trends defined by the Neoclassical and Rococo styles, and from two of the settings that best relate to these: Spain and Italy.
This book therefore proposes an itinerary that begins with the beauty and fury of Luca Giordano's first three sketches for the battles found in the Monastery of El Escorial and concludes with the austerity of Vicente López's painting on copper, The Archangel Saint Raphael, or the epic emphasis of Vicente Rodés's Portrait of General Castaños. A century and a half separates these works, and it is within this chronological arc that this project is based: the paintings of the Rococo, with their antecedents and consequences.
