John Singer Sargent is considered the greatest portraitist of his time due to his elegance, his technical skill in drawing with the brush, and his talent for capturing the distinctive details of his subjects.
Born to American parents, Sargent was born in Florence, where he began his artistic studies. Later, he moved to Paris to further his education and finally settled in London, where he spent most of his life. However, he always maintained his connection to the United States, where, in addition to portraits, he created murals for important public buildings. In his later years, he devoted much of his work to plein-air painting, freeing himself from some of the formal restrictions of portraiture and emphasizing light and movement in a style very close to Impressionism.
Throughout his career, he produced nearly 900 paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His body of work reflects Sargent's numerous travels throughout his life, from Europe and North America to the Near East.
