In 1911, Archer Milton Huntington, founder of The Hispanic Society of America in New York, commissioned Joaquín Sorolla to create Vision of Spain, a monumental series of murals depicting various regions and customs of the country. Completed and installed in 1926, this work is considered one of the most striking interior spaces in New York.
In these paintings, Sorolla fuses his characteristic plein-air naturalism with Impressionist influences, elements of ancient and Renaissance art, and modern devices such as high horizons, expressive brushstrokes, and almost abstract backgrounds. These innovations imbue the series with a powerful visual energy. Vision of Spain is presented in a spectacular eight-meter-long foldout, which reproduces the works in the exact order in which they are displayed in the Hispanic Society library. This edition allows one to appreciate the magnitude and artistic richness of one of Sorolla's most ambitious projects.
