Hunting for Prints: Sorolla in Small Format

Joaquín Sorolla painted nearly two thousand small works on cardboard or tablet, which he called "notes," "stains," or "color notes." These pieces, which he often transported in boxes along with brushes and tubes of oil paint, allowed him to paint outdoors and quickly capture visual impressions. Although initially considered intimate exercises or preparatory studies, over time they became valued as autonomous works that freely expressed his creativity and experimentation.

Sorolla recognized their importance, including them in his international exhibitions between 1906 and 1911. The exhibition "Hunting Impressions: Sorolla in Small Format" brings together more than 230 of these works, representative of all stages of his career. These pieces stand out for their agile and luminous execution, revealing a bold, synthetic Sorolla, always seeking new visual challenges. They constitute a lesser-known but essential facet of the master, where his artistic genius is manifested with freshness and spontaneity.
