The exhibition, which opened in November 2001 at the National Library in Madrid, curated by Joaquín Yarza Luaces, was the first organized by the State Society for Foreign Cultural Action. Focusing on the goldsmithing and metalwork of the Early Middle Ages, it showcased the sumptuous wealth and cosmopolitanism of the period through works made using the champlevé (block enamel) technique. Highlights included the work of the Limoges workshops and their influence on the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos, one of the main cultural centers of the Iberian Peninsula. The exhibition brought together nearly one hundred exceptional pieces—reliquaries, chests, book covers, chalices, and crosses—many from international and ecclesiastical collections. The catalog includes detailed studies of each object, preceded by articles by leading experts such as Barbara D. Boehm, Elisabeth Taburet-Delahaye, Francesca Español, and others, who analyze the historical, artistic, and spiritual context of these masterpieces.
