The monograph The Eye and Its Narratives. Surrealist Cinema from Mexico , published by the National Museum of Art (MUNAL) and the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE), explores the link between Mexican cinema and surrealism. It was created as a complement to the film series of the same name, exhibited at the MUNAL alongside the exhibition Surrealism: Communicating Vessels . This book analyzes the relationship between cinema and visual art, highlighting films that address the dreamlike, the fantastic, and the irrational. It includes studies of more than forty national and international films, such as Buñuel's Un Chien Andalou , Cocteau's Orphée , and works by Man Ray and Fernand Léger.
Renowned specialists contribute to this publication: Javier Espada delves into surrealist creators in Mexico; Volker Rivinius analyzes avant-garde cinema; Aurelio de los Reyes examines the surrealist aesthetic in film; and critics such as Gustavo García and Carlos Bonfil address its impact, censorship, and evolution. Alicia Sánchez Mejorada and Olga Sáénz bridge the gap between painting and cinema. Richly illustrated and carefully edited, this book invites you to rediscover surrealism through a cinematic lens. Available only in Mexico.
