Concern over the environmental deterioration of the wintering grounds of the cranes of Extremadura, and the conviction that the work of artists can move the consciences of individuals and institutions in favor of solving this progressive problem, motivated the Artists for Nature Foundation (ANF), with the support of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), to launch this project on Europe's most beloved migratory birds. Commissioned by the ANF, sixty artists born in Spain, France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Finland, Norway, Russia, China, and the United States of America, all specializing in the portrayal of wildlife, set out to capture the lives of cranes in their drawings, watercolors, and oil paintings, as well as the diverse landscapes they traverse on their annual migration from the islands of Öland and Rügen (Netherlands and Germany), through central Europe, to the grasslands and forests of Extremadura. At the same time, aspects of the architecture and people of the rural areas through which their journey takes place are reflected.
