This book aims to gather within its pages the finest works of Spanish painting treasured on British soil, thus becoming a sort of portable museum of the attraction the United Kingdom has felt toward Spanish art and the bond that these universal icons of culture have forged between the British Isles and Spain. Spanish artists of the Golden Age, such as Murillo, Zurbarán, and Velázquez, are key to the beginning of a truly passionate appreciation of Spanish art on the part of the great collectors of the late modern period, as well as on the part of public institutions and those born from private initiative after the Industrial Revolution.
There are notable collections of works created by Spanish artists in the United Kingdom. Leading public institutions, such as the National Gallery in London and the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh, as well as public and private collections, such as the Wallace Collection, the Duke of Stafford Collection, and the Fitzwilliam Museum, hold a significant number of masterpieces of Spanish art.
