Belgium and the Marquis de Villalobar during the First World War. Occupied but Protected offers a new perspective on the situation in Belgium during the First World War, focusing on the German occupation and the suffering of ten million people who needed to be fed in a war-ravaged country. Charity alone was not enough, and during the first months of the conflict, one of the largest humanitarian operations in history unfolded. Thanks to the Comité National de Secours et d'Alimentation and the Commissions for the Relief of Belgium, supplies were sent to Belgium and northern France. The Spanish diplomat Marquis de Villalobar (1864-1926) played a crucial role, maintaining good relations with both sides and helping Belgian citizens by importing food, intervening in the release of prisoners, and performing small everyday favors. The behind-the-scenes diplomatic intrigues make this story a fascinating tale, with Villalobar as its central figure.
