This catalogue accompanies the exhibition Sorolla. Torment and Devotion, which focuses on the early years of the painter Joaquín Sorolla (1880-1900), which took place between Valencia, Rome, Paris, Assisi, and Madrid. It deals with Sorolla's approach to both religious painting, which enabled him to compete in major competitions, and popular and devotional costumbrismo, a genre that became fashionable in Spanish painting during the last quarter of the 19th century, partly thanks to the influence of the painter Mariano Fortuny. In this way, Sorolla attempted to make his way among the upper middle class with scenes in sacred interiors and Valencian Baroque churches featuring episodes of popular religious devotion.
