Sorolla. Tormento y devoción

This catalogue goes with the exhibition Sorolla. Torment and Devotion, which focuses on the early years of the painter Joaquín Sorolla (1880–1900), when he lived between Valencia, Rome, Paris, Assisi and Madrid. It is an examination of Sorolla through both religious painting, with which he competed in major events, and painting of popular and devout costumes and manners, a genre which became fashionable in Spanish painting in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, partly thanks to the path laid by the painter Mariano Fortuny. Thus, Sorollo tried to carve a niche for himself among the haute bourgeoisie with scenes of sacred interiors and Baroque churches in Valencia with episodes of popular religious devotion.
